ART 116

I’m Serena, an Arizona State University freshman majoring in Painting and Drawing and Art Education. Originally from Taiwan, many of my artworks are circled around Chinese/Taiwanese culture. I am passionate about illustration and storytelling, especially creating children’s picture books and enjoy reading magical realism stories, exploring Japanese thrifts/street fashion, playing video games, karaokes, and learning more about Chinese painting.

Through My Lens: An Artistic Journey by Serena Teng

For my Sci-Fi world, I wanted to do something with windows and changing worlds. The girl is walking on a street and inside different windows shows different worlds. One shows a cat and dinosaur underwater with a lot of fish around them. The other side shows showers and a turkey looking through the window. I wanted the

For my concept, I wanted to make it look ominous and have a scary feeling to it. As I am still not used to the drawing system in illustrator, it looks very wonky, but I feel like it adds to the piece to make it have a very off vibe. I was inspired by an animal farm where animals take over the entire farm and

Unit 4: Parody Trailer

Past Lives Parody

As I haven't watched movies in a long time, I decided to dedicate this trailer parody project to my friend who loves the movie “Past lives.” In this film it talks about how the main characters of the film are childhood friends that had kept in contact, but had not met for 20 years. It tells a story of how they are meant to be together, but met at the wrong time. Situations change and people move on, so when they met again after years, they had a whirlwind of nostalgia and emotions. For the cinematography, I had my suite mate and friend to help film shots around my dorm. We did not want to overcomplicate the scenes, so we filmed everything outside or inside of our rooms. We focused on certain shots where the sunlight will hit certain points or focusing on the lighting in the room to show emotions. As this is a korean film, we thought to create this parody as the “Chinese version,” as me and my friend are from Taiwan and it would make more sense. There were also multiple correlations and similarities to certain words from Korean and Chinese. It was very fun to film as we not only filmed, but also had to translate the words to Chinese.

For my video project, I wanted to do something simple and fun where I confuse my audience by the end of the video. The video is on a casual day where I do random things, but it gets more random every scene. I first played the guitar as I have always wanted to learn the guitar but was never able to actually learn it, then I began to draw as I am in an art major right now, and thirdly I began to tie my shoelaces in the middle of the room. In the last scene, I am seen eating yogurt behind a chair with chopsticks. I wanted that to be the last scene since I want to catch the audience off guard and sometimes I do eat food with the utensils that are usually not used for certain food.
